Ive just purchased a dlink wireless router model dsl-604+ (a UK model).
anyways, i've managed to get it hooked up hard wired to my crappy PC and now am trying to set it up so i can hook my 12" powerbook to the network. I know that the network is set up as the airport has found the ssid name. but when i select it, it says that it cannot connect to the specified network. ive checked to make sure that i have no passwords and firwall on. does anyone know what im doing wrong. I have set the laptop to auto dhcp.
thanks if you can help me

Check again (through a wired computer) that there is no encryption on the router enabled. Then check for something like "MAC address filtering" or "MAC address table". It will be in either the security or wireless config tabs. Disable this feature or add your PB's airport's MAC address to the list. Generally, I like to turn all this sort of stuff off first, get all my computers connected and then re-enable them for security.

i found the mac security that was mentioned and it is turned off so it can accept any MAC address. ive also tried wiring the router to my powerbook and it seems to work fine. any other ideas? i just cant seem to find whats wrong as all the security is turned off. no firewall no nothing. one thing i did try was to manually input everything as when i switched on dhcp auto on my powerbook, it didnt show a router address so ive manually put this in. is it normal for the dhcp option not to show the router? im using 10.2.6 by the way

The default address for your router is 192.168.0.1; its subnet will be 192.168.0.xxx-if you're going to manually assign an address, make it 192.168.0.(anything from 001-252).
Now, the big question is "Why are you using the 'crappy PC' in this setup at all?" Is your modem USB-only, so you need a Windows driver to make it work? That's another animal to deal with, but it's a pretty tame one.
So, what is the deal? USB modem? Just like torturing yourself with PCs?

LOL...i've actually changed my setup so now i use my imac as the main setup, it was just easier to us the pc as i previously had a usb modem which only worked on a beige box, it was easier to test setup everything. as for the manual setup, i assigned 192.168.0.2 for the wireless setup and made sure that the imac used a different ip address, but yet again still no luck. the funny thing is i know it works as ive seen it on my friends pc setup ( yes i still have freinds using the pc's???), how could this be that this is so difficult for it to setup on a mac? i still havent told him yet as i am always mocking him for using a pc and telling him how easy this will be on macs..........
