I purchased an AEBS yesterday at the Apple Store but it seems to be labeled with the Japanese name for Airport: AirMac.

I suspect it's just a mistake with the labeling (everything else is labeled correctly), but if it WAS a unit meant for the Japanese market, will it still work in the US?

I have never read anything stating a difference. The only country I ever hearing had a problem with the tech used in the Airport was France. Well let us know if you notice anything weird.

Yes, the FCC does come looking for this sort of thing; I'd take the card back and ask for one that's legal in the U.S.
