I'm not too experienced at networking, so I'm hoping someone can help me with a (hopefully) simple problem.

I have a PowerBook 12" with an Airport Extreme card, an FP iMac, an Airport Extreme Base Station, and DSL internet access.

I've got the PowerBook 12" interacting just fine with the AEBS via AE card. What I'm having trouble with is the wired connection (via LAN port) between the iMac and the AEBS. Basically, I can't get the iMac to "see" the AEBS, even though they're linked by a fresh new RJ45 cable. Airport Setup Assistant detects no Airport hardware, and the Airport Admin Utility does not see my AEBS. I therefore have no internet access and file sharing is not possible.

I can't find much on the Apple support site that might help me. Can someone give me some pointers on what to do or check out? I hope I'm just missing something silly, given my general inexperience.

On the iMac, go to the Network pref pane in System Prefs. Select Built-in Ethernet from Show. Click on TCP/IP tab. In the Configure menu, choose Using DHCP. If this is all set like this already, select anything else in the Configure menu and hit Apply. Then Re-select Using DHCP and hit Apply again.
You should get an IP from the AEBS. It will be on the same subnet. If it says self-assigned below it, post back.

I don't seem to have the "using DHCP" option on the TCP/IP tab ... My only options are "Using PPP" and "Manually."

Any advice now?

Re-read my first post step by step. You're probably looking at the internal modem options. You need to select Built in ethernet from Show menu.
In fact, that's most likely your whole problem. You have to select ethernet and then press the Apply button before this will work. Basically, you haven't turned ethernet "on" yet.

I wish I could post a screen shot. Here's what I am looking at right now:

- Location: Automatic
- Show: Built-in Ethernet
- Configure: "Using PPP" or "Manually" -- no DHCP option.
- IP Address: (Provided by PPP Server)
- Subnet Mask:
- Router:

A-ha! I just figured it out. I needed to turn off "Connect using PPPoE" in the PPPoE tab in order to get the "Using DHCP" option to appear. Looks like the problem is solved... Thanks!
