I've followed the steps at this page, and I am running to serious problems. (again)

http://www.joelshoemaker.com/compute...lesharing.html

I'm about ready to throw in the towel with my networking attemps.

As the administrator, I can't set my user status to log in from the web. This feature is eliminated. If I try to make a new user, I can log in as that user to my Mac from my PC. The problem...

When I drag files across the network to the Mac, they're in the user#2 folder. Logged in as me, I can't access them do to permission issues.

All I would like to do is share files across the network. I want my Mac to be able to see certain folders on my PC, and my PC to be able to see certain folders on my Mac.

This has to be possible ?
Right?

[edit] I will offer to pay someone, if I have to. Is this possible, or am I just wasting my time trying?

This is one area in which I firmly believe XP has the edge over OS X.

In XP, I just right click the entire hard drive (C, D, whichever it's labeled) and go to "Sharing..." and Enable Sharing Across the Network. Then, on your Mac, from the desktop hit Cmnd + K, and you can mount that shared HD on your Mac's desktop & browse as you please. (Assuming you've enabled Windows File Sharing in the System Preferences)

Now, on the Mac, it's more difficult. There's a folder called "Public" and anything in that folder can be seen across the network, but anything OUTSIDE of that folder CANNOT be seen. Pretty dumb in my opinion...yeah, in workplaces I see the security stuff, but geez. So basically anything you want your Win machine to pull over, you've gotta put it in that folder first to be seen.

You can add SMB shares by editing the /etc/smb.conf file (as root) and then restarting smbd with this in the Terminal:
Code:
sudo kill -HUP `ps ax | grep [s]mbd | awk '{ print $1; }'`
Or you could use the swat configuration tool at http://localhost:901, although you might have to enable that first in /etc/inetd.conf: execute the following in the Terminal
Code:
sudo -s echo 'swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/swat swat' >> /etc/inetd.conf kill -HUP `ps ax | grep [^x][i]netd | awk '{ print $1; }'` exit
Then log into swat using 'root' as your login and your root password. The utility points itself out really. To restart smbd from swat go to the Status page and click Restart smbd.
Shares can point to anywhere on your HD. I have one share set to the root so I can access everything from there.

I'd just use ftp to get onto the mac.. seems to be a little more cumbersome but a lot easier to configure
