Thanks for taking the time to read this, I hate bothering you guys but i'm at the end of my rope with this one...

Here is the situation: i have a motorola surfboard cable modem, connected to a netgear mr814 wireless router, and my powermac g4 connected to the netgear. this seems to work alright and i can surf the internet much like i did without the router...

i need to connect my replay tv way over in the living room to the internet so i first purchased another mr814 for the living room but i couldn't figure out how to get it to connect. then i read something about soho routers won't bridge... i need an access point... so i went and got a usb access point... only it seems that the replay tv's usb port isn't powered, i plug it in, nothing, i plug it in my mac, at least the power comes on... so i go and get the linksys wap11 and all the drivers and configuration software is pc only...? I connected that to my netgear but i can't figure out how to connect it?

basically, can anybody possibly walk me through this?!?

thanks in advance...

DISCLAIMER: I have never used a Replay and have only read about them briefly, so I may be way off, but...

It seems to me that you may be better off running an ethernet cable to the Replay, instead of relying on 802.11b. I understand that the signal is compressed, but it's still probably a LOT of information to be sending wirelessly. Maybe I'm completely missing the point here, but would it be possible to just run a cable? Does the Replay even have an e'net port?

i'd be running an ethernet cable through my living room and that seems somewhat ugly... and yes, the replay does have an ethernet port, if i can't get this wireless business right, i probably will run the cable though

What about under the house, through the attic or basement or even over the roof? It can be kinda nasty work running a cable through these spaces, but once it's done, it's done.

Oh and, if you do run a cable, you'll also be able to do other stuff with it. Once it's there you could add a switch to it and add another WAP, to extend your wireless range. And, of course, you'll have additional ports in the switch that could come in handy if you want a wired connection for any reason or if someone comes over with a laptop with no 802.11 card. Just a thought.

i'm trying to add a WAP right now, and i can't seem to get the linksys configured... are you telling me i can't add a wireless access point without a wired switch at the same spot? what is the point of wireless then?

For security reasons you have to make a wired connection to the wireless base station in order to set it up. You wouldn't want some passerby to be able to access your base station wirelessly and change the configuration.

See if this helps:
