Yeah, but...protocol standards being what they are, manufacturers do not always implement the specs correctly. I recently swapped out a LinkSys wireless router for a NetGear...my new AE card COULD communicate with the LinkSys, but could not reliably re-join the network after sleeping. And, the LinkSys would drop the WAN link periodically, without warning. No such problems with the NetGear...I had to upgrade to the latest firmware to get AE to work with it, but since then, no problems.

Good Luck.

Plain old AirPort cards (802.11b standard) should work with any 802.11b wireless router. Any difficulties you run into are usually caused by differences in labeling and nomenclature-Apple calls it a Network Name, but everybody else calls it a SSID (which is directly from the 802.11b standard).

AirPort Extreme is a little different. Unless Apple's updated their firmware in the last couple of months, the Extreme card is built around a draft of the 802.11g standard, which has only recently been finalized. Further, some of the Apple design choices in implementing the 802.11g protocols aren't as interoperable as some other manufacturers' choices. In other words, The AE cards aren't as reliable as we'd all hope an Apple product would be.

Apple has, and as of AirPort 3.1 (we're currently at 3.1.1), AirPort Extreme is fully 802.11g final spec compatible.
