I've got a setup like this:

Unsurprisingly the Powerbook picks up the Printer no problem and can print to it, but the Windows XP PC's can't see it at all.

IP addresses as follows:
Airport (192.168.1.101)
PowerBook (192.168.1.102)
Router (192.168.1.1)
Windows PC's (192.168.1.3), (192.168.1.4)

The Windows XP PCs can't see the Printer at all, how can I enable them to print to it?

Thanks.

I'm not exactly sure if this is an option, but on the Mac, go to "System Preferences", "Network", and make sure all the Windows-type options are on, such as Windows File Sharing and the like.

Also, on the XP machines, try going into the Printer Wizard and adding a Network Printer & see if it'll recognize it.

In all honesty, I *think* I heard awhile back that WinXP computers could use the AirPort for their wireless activity, however they couldn't use the Shared USB printing option; whether this is definitely true or not, remains to be seen.

I remember hearing this also but can't find the source. You may also want to check the networking forum to see if it's a network issue...

It's a HP 959c, but someone on Arstechnica helped me.

Solution:

You have to set up the printer in a certain way for XP to use it. In the Add Printer wizard do the following:
1. Select 'Local Printer'
2. Choose 'Create a new port' and "Standard TCP/IP Port'.
3. Enter the IP address of the base station for the port.
4. Choose "Generic Network Device" then click next then finish.
5. Select appropriate printer brand and install your drivers.

I was going to have the following but I didn't think it would work:

Cable Modem --- Ariport Extreme --- Powerbook and Sony VAIO Printing wirelessly to an HP Officejet through the USB connection.

Would this work?

The Base Station requires specific printers to work properly.

I have the same setup. I was able to get my Canon i950 to print from my XP box. (The Canon printer is connected directly to the AE Base Station. My XP machine is connected to my router. (The AE is only functioning as a Wireless Bridge--DHCP is turned off since I have an additional router.) When setting up the port on the XP machine, I read somewhere to tell the computer that the Airport is a HP Jetdirect box. It worked!!! Of course you have to put in the IP address of the AE Base Station. Anyway, I can print wirelessly from my 12" Powerbook and also print from my connected XP box to the Canon that is connected to the AE Base Station! Hope this helps you.
Jim

I know it makes no sense why you would tell the computer you are using a HP Jetdirect box when you aren't, but it works!

I have an HP D135. I don't know why it wouldn't work with it (not listed). I'll give it a try and I hope it works.
