Hi,
I have an Epson Stylus 740 and a brother HL 5040 connected to an iMac (Feb. 2001 model) via USB. The iMac is linked to an Ethernet network via a hub that's also connected to a cable modem and Airport base station (graphite). A Pismo Powerbook accesses the Internet via the Base Station.
Both computers can access the Internet and can share files without any problems. However, the Powerbook cannot see the printers in Print Center. Printer sharing is activated on the iMac, and the firewalls are configured correctly.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dan

Does anyone know what Apple uses for print jobs when you specify "IP printing"? Is this just the lpd port or what? And when you share a printer is it using the same thing or something else? I haven't really tried too much soo I'm hoping for some insight from someone who is using Print Center to print from OS X to networked printers. Thanks.

Try this. I have an iMac (with an Epson 750 via USB) connected to a wireless router (BT Voyager 2000) via ethernet and a Powerbook G4. I finally got the print centre to work by turning on printer sharing on both computers and making sure that appletalk was turned off. After this I could see all avaible printers and print on the Epson from the powerbook in a wireless setup.

Both OS X and Windows NT (and beyond)use LPR printing to print to an IP. This is the Unix IP printing protocol, which is implemented in the kernel of OS X, and in the printing system of Windows OSs.

if your base station isn't acting as a bridge, then your imac and the powerbook are on different subnets, which would inhibit printer sharing.
so your setup is
cable modem--hub--imac, with bs connected to hub, right?

Is there a website detailing USB printer sharing between OSX and WinXP?

My understanding is that you cannot print to an NT/2k print queue using *nix standard lpr/lpd without installing the Microsoft TCP/IP Printing "add-on" which is not installed on either operating system (MS systems) by default. I checked several MS servers that maintain queues and they do not themselves listen on the standard lpd port (515 if I'm not mistaken).
So my next question would be what are people using for configs to print to SMB shared printers? I have not used SAMBA in quite awhile and I figure either that SAMBA or CUPS configs may be useful in this situation. Printing raw to Jetdirects has not been very effective or consistent as of late. I'm thinking maybe shooting things off to an SMB print queue may yield better results. Complete shot in the dark. Thanks for any suggestions.
