I bought a S/H APC Smart UPS700 with AP9606 Web/SNMP Management Card for my Macs the other day. The UPS is working fine but I want to use the AP9606 card to control it from outside network and to control other PCs on the network. The problem is that the previous unknown owner set an unknown IP address that is oustide my subnet mask and so I cannot see the card. The flashing LEDs on the card indicate it is functioning OK and I know the card's MAC address from a sticker on it. The Wizard provided by APC (not the mac friendliest comapny in the world) only sets up card with uncofigured IP adresses so it is U/S.
I have tried forcibly setting the IP address using the arp -s xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx XX-YY-ZZ-AA-BB-CC
command from terminal but that does not do it either (can't pin card afterwards) and the Reset button on the back plane just forces the card to reeboot but does not change the IP address.
Does anybody know a way to scan this card for its IP address using its MAC address? I have tried connecting it to a router using DHCP and then seeing if the card address is in the router DHCP table but it is not. Is there any way to send a rogue packet to crash the card and cause it to lose its IP address so that the wizard can then identify it?
Any other suggestions that might work?
TIA

Try holding the reset button for a while. Sometimes that forces a factory-default reset. Does Apple System Profiler see it and list its IP? What about Network Utility?
If you can find its IP, change you comp to the same subnet. Then you'll probably be able to config it.

What happens if you power it down? Surely that would reset it to the factory default.

A closer read of the downloadable manual for the card (RTFM) gave the answer. The card can be accessed via the serial port in the UPS using the APC 0024C serial cable and Hyperterminal in Windows 2000.
Just quit all processes using the COM1 port, connect the PC to the UPS using the 0024C cable, launch Windows Hyperterminal, press Return, press the Reset button on the card, press Return again and enter apc in the displayed user name and password fields.
The resultant display shows the set IP address, MAC address, etc., and offers ways to change the settings.
The card is now running beautifully.
