Hi, I'm having trouble with the reception on my FM114P and 2 powerbooks. Because of where my dsl comes in, everything is in a closet downstairs. I can't move the router because of everthing that's plugged into it, so I thought I might just extend the antenna 10-15 feet to a point with much better line of sight.

I thought of just putting a piece of coax between the router and the antenna. There will be a drop in efficiency because of the couplings, but the signal wouldn't have to go through a couple of walls.

1. What sort of coax is best for this.
2. Does anyone know what sort of connector is on the FM114P. There's no information on Netgears' site.

If this shows some improvement, I can look into a proper external antenna.

Thanks,

J.

Good question.

Why don't you just run an ethernet cable from your DSL modem to that 10-15 feet away location... and put your FM114P there?

That would be my approach.

I love my FM114P. Best box ever.
I always use protection when fscking my Mac... Do you?

Can't do that, because it would mean running 4 network cables for everything else attached to the router and have them in plain site on the wall.

The idea with the antenna was to keep it reasonably out of the way in our living room. I can blend a single white coax fairly well, but a cluster of cat 5 would be pushing it from a wife acceptance factor.

Have found a cheap netgear extension antenna, I just need the coax and connectors. netgear do a 5m cable for $55 which seemed a bit steep.

Cheers,

J.

Why not just get another access point?

Ya, that's what I'd do. I'd get a Netgear MR814 and bridge it on the same network. The added bonus of this approach would be add'l wired ports there for the odd-ball LARGE file transfer or visiting computer (w/ no .11 card). There are actually a bunch of advantages to this that will probably come up.

Believe it or not, that really hadn't occurred to me. I'll look into the cost and see if that's cheaper than just putting in the extra antenna.

Kind of pissed that my network doesn't reach upstairs reliably.

Cheers,

J.
