Have setup an ad-hoc computer-to-computer network with a 1GHz iMac was the wired computer (on a cable modem), and a 12" Powerbook as the wireless computer, both running OS 10.2.6 and Airport 3.1.1 with Airport Extreme cards.
Problem is: from the Powerbook, local file sharing works fine, but web browsing does not. iMac functions perfectly.
From the PowerBook, I can ping an IP address, but not a domain name. Sounds like a DNS problem, right?
So I manually entered TimeWarner's Name Servers, and entered "local." (suggestion from MacFixit it forum) in the 'Search Domain' field, but still does not work.
I assume that from the standpoint of the PowerBook, the iMac is functioning as a DNS server, but I don't know how to configure it properly.
Any ideas?

Did you actually turn on Internet sharing in the Sharing system setting?
Simply making a computer-to-computer network with Airport won't router internet data.

Yes, Internet Sharing is on.
This morning, my friend turned off the Firewall (I didn't realize that was on), and everything started working as expected.
Now she just needs to decide if she wants to get a hardware firewall, since she apparently can't use the software-based one.

You should be able to continue using the firewall, but you will have to manually add an entry to pass through DNS. I believe it is port 53 but I have not verified that, just looked it up.
IMO, the best solution would be to get a cheap router to sit between her iMac and the cable/dsl modem.
