Hi,
Broadband availability in the Uk is scandalously poor. Unless you live in a large city you have next to zero chance of getting broadband access to the internet.
Rural communities have started taking things into their own hands and are setting up wide ranging wireless networks which are communally owned and operated, based on a satellite downlink.
How difficult is this to do?
What type of hardware would be required?
If a largish village bought ten wireless base-stations and linked them together, how much area could be covered?
Is .11g the way to go? I was thinking that setting up a Squid Proxy Server would be useful, in which case the extra bandwidth of .11g would come in handy.
What is the difference between this kit <http://www.locustworld.com/index.php> and any bridgeable (is that the word when the base-stations are able to relay the signal?) base-station setup?
I may have to do this myself. Should I just shoot myself now? Is there a world of pain ahead? Especially getting a bunch of Windoze users hooked up...
Any thoughts gratefully received.
Thanks
Simon
