So I was hunting around the prefs panes the other day, and I noticed that there is/was a configuration in the list of network port configs that I didn't reconise. I have :

1 Built-in Ethernet
2. Internal Modem

Then there was a third one there, I think it was PPTP. I deleted it immediately, I suppose I should have written it down.

What is it, and How did it get there?

My wife tried to connect to her works servers using VPN a while a go (didn't work), could it be from that?

PPTP=Point to Point Tunneling Protocol. It's one of a few ways to implement a Virtual Private Network or VPN. If you really needed it, the application that uses it will complain, very loudly, when it finds out it's not there.

Now you'll need to find out how your wife's VPN was installed originally, and reinstall it so the protocol is available.
