Apparently my system does not recognize the IP address that I manually assign in the TCP/IP panel of the Network preference pane.
Syntoms:
The Sharing preference pane does not show any Network Address after I have already assigned an IP address (in the TCP/IP panel of the Network preference pane -- I have made sure to press the Apply button!)
In the Info panel of the Network Utility application, the IP Address shown is '0.0.0.0'. This is not what I assigned! (I assigned something like 10.0.1.5.)
If I try to ping my PowerBook from another machine, looking for the address that I have assigned in the Network pane, my PowerBook is not found. (I have tried assigning various addresses but the result is the same.)
I can not connect to the local network (or the internet). This must be a consequence that my PowerBook has no "self-identity".
I have restarted several times but that has not corrected the problem. I am afraid something has become corrupted.
Any ideas of what can I do?
And when manually assigning an IP, you should also specify a DNS server. You can just use you router/ABS's IP for this. In your case, it would probably be 10.0.1.1.
