I brought my new Powerbook into work with the Airport Extreme card, and have had no luck getting on the network.
They use 802.11b access points, with a SSID that is not broadcast. They also use WEP encryption, and provide the info to us like this:
key 1 : 11 22 33 44 55
key 2: 66 77 88 99 00
key 3: aa bb cc dd ee
key 4: ff ff ff ff ff
Primary key 2
I've tried using the "Other..." option from the Airport menu, and type in the correct SSID. I then select 40-bit hex as the key type, and put in what is listed as key 2. I get back an error of "The password you entered is not correct for the selected AirPort network". I've tried all 4 keys with no luck.
On my Windows XP laptop, it has an option labeled "Key index" that I set to 2. If this is set wrong, the XP laptop won't work. How can I specify this on my Powerbook?

Tried that, doing $6677889900 in the password option (as 40-bit hex wouldn't allow $) Same problem, password entered is not correct.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Since you have obviously figured out a lot about the situation, maybe you could fill us in on what else you've done, what version of the software you're using, and so on. It's been a long time since I messed with 40-bit WEP, so I don't remember what options you really have when using that level of encryption. A little more info on your situation would help me look up what I don't recall.

I'm using OS 10.2.7 (shipped on the Powerbook) and don't have a different Mac with Airport to compare to. It's using the built in Airport Extreme card that shipped in the new 15 inch Powerbooks. System Profiler shows this:
So far, I am using the Airport menu icon, clicking Other..., then typing in the network id and 40 bit hex key. Here is a screenshot of the window.
If I start typing in the hex key, the ok button greys out until I have typed in the entire key, so I know the format is right. I have tried entering the same key under the other options on the pulldown, and most don't even accept the format.
I have also tried using the $ trick in the password field via Internet Connect, but no luck that way either.
I'm starting to suspect some type of 802.11g issue here with the base stations they use here. I may try to get a PCMCIA card that will work in my Powerbook to test this theory. So far, this has worked fine with my Airport Base Station at home (first graphite version) and now a D-Link 802.11g base station I bought last night.

Tinkering with this more, I am pretty sure I found the problem. I can't set the key index to 2.
Here is a shot of the XP settings (key here is not accurate and SSID omitted)
Note the Key Index choice at the bottom. This can be 1, 2, 3, or 4. If I set this wrong on my XP system, it looses access to the wireless network.
