I had OS 10.2.6 installed on a Mac 8500 (upgraded with a G3 card. (The HD died) and I'm about to reinstall OS 10.2 on a new HD.
But the problem I had while OS 10.2 WAS working was that OS 10.2 did NOT work with my PCI Ethernet Card (Asante') which worked with OS 9.1 and OS 9.22 fine. (The Mac 8500 has 2 built in ethernet ports but I used the PCI card for the Internet).
Question (s):
Do I need a PCI ethernet card WITH a OS 10.2 driver?
(I am assuming the built-in ethernet ports cannot work with the required DHCP server the ISP uses but I am not sure of this.).
IF a new PCI card IS required, will ANY ethernet card work with OS 10.2????
Thanks, Kimpton

There is no reason why the built-in ethernet port would not work.

Have you tried the Asante web site for an update driver?

In general, DHCP is DHCP; it's supposed to be a standard, after all. Your ethernet card should work with any DHCP server, no matter what platform.

Here's a link to a list of PCI cards that have been tested and shown compatible with OS X. On this page is a report from a user that says he had his Asante card working under 10.1.5, but it crashed his machine when he installed 10.2. He got updated drivers from Asante, and that fixed the problem! I'd look into this before I went anywhere else.

Update 9/30/03 OS 10.2 installed on new HD. Obtained Asante's OS X driver for the card (590) I have, but the ethernet is not working properly. It gets the ISP addresses etc but that is all
Browsers don't work,.
The built-in ethernet ports do NOT work with the ISP's cable modem under OS 9.1 nor OS 9.22 . These built-in ethernet ports work fine connecting to my other Macs??? AppleTalk problem??
The 590 works fine with OS 9.1 and OS 9.22.
To use the built in ethernet port do you have to treat the ISP cable modem as if it was another Mac?? (AppleTalk on, file sharing etc???

Thanks Kimpton
