I recently updated my MR814v2's firmware to v5.01, which is the latest version on Netgear's site. I did this to try to resolve some periodic drop-out I was having. Subsequently, I could no longer send any large amounts of data up to the internet. Large email attachments would not send and iChat AV would fail.
As soon as either of these attempted to send, the Airport signal would drop to nothing, effectively disconnecting me. The signal would immediately return, as soon as the app gave up and displayed an error.
This was very frustrating.
After spending a % of my life on hold, waiting for a level 2 tech at Netgear, I was immediately told that he had seen this problem and offered to send me an updated firmware version. Now, why he hasn't told any of the other techs who answer the phone there about this problem/version, nor actually posted this version, which clearly fixes the existing one, I know not. But if anybody wants it, here it is.
Needless to say, I assume no responsibility for your d/l, installation and use of this, but it sure did the trick for me. Levelheadedness dictates that if yours ain't broke, don't try fixin' it.
Oh, and no drop-outs yet, by the way...

Hi, Can't download this from your page. It doesn't seem to fully download. Any problems/issues that could make it behave like this?

Are you using Safari? Try another browser.
Or just open my Public folder. There's no password.

EDIT:
I just re-posted the firmware as a .sit file. It downloaded fine for me now. Let me know if you still can't get it.

Yes, I was using Safari the first time I tried. Just used Safari again and successfully downloaded the .sit file you kindly posted. Thanks!!!
I wonder what it is about Safari that prevented the initial download?

Actually, I described 2 problems, with 2 different versions of the firmware.

I don't know if i upgraded the firmware correctly. When i downloaded the upgrade image from netgear. I got a .img file but i couldn't double click to expand it. It reported with a not valid image error. But then i open up my IE browser and i clicked the upgrade firmware option and pointed to the image file and it did perform an upgrade.

however my 12" powerbook stll couln't access to the internet or received any dhcp address despite it cleary detected the router.

This is correct. That's how these upgrades work.

Do you have WEP and/or MAC address filtering (Wireless Card Access List) enabled on the Netgear? Try disabling BOTH of those and connecting again. Then re-enable them one at a time, making sure your PB connects properly.

Thank you for your reply. I have tried enabling and disabling both, but it doesn't work with the airport extreme card, as i said before. The original airport card is working fine though.

I will try again at my office tomorrow. Thanks again!

Well, don't worry about ENabling them until you get connected. Just leave them off. Period.
Also try changing channels.

what channels are you using? i've tried channel 11 and channel 6 so far with no luck. The powermac g4 with the first generation airport card is using channel 10 to connect though.

i brought this router home tonight and it worked. I have no idea why it didn't work in my office, i suspect is the DNS problem because i got it working a little bit this afternoon by playing around with the DNS setting but it didn't last more than 30 seconds of surfing net.

I don't know what else can be wrong? i have a airport wireless bluetooth keyboard, and i was connecting to a desktop g4 with a first generation airport card using computer to computer network.

yes, i upgraded the latest firmware in the airport card and the netgear. I found out that our AT&T DSL modem doesn't work with the netgear router, it doesn't give any DHCP wirelessly to my powerbook, but if i plug the netgear router to another smc wired router, it will work fine.

Strange, but hey at least it works.
