I am the only member in my fraternity with a Mac, so no one else was able to help me with the following...

When I go to Go-->Connect to Server-->Local, I see the computers that are connected to our local network and am able to download their files. I am trying to figure out how to add my own computer to that list. I have tried going to System Prefs-->Sharing-->Start Personal File Sharing, but still no one else can see my computer. So...how do I do the following:

1) Allow my computer to share selected files on the local network.
2) Only allow others to download the files, not change them.
3) Use a name for my folder different from the name of my computer.
4) Is the Public folder in the Home directory the correct and only place to put these files I would like to share?
5) Password-protect some of the stuff

I have never tried this before, so forgive me if some of these questions do not make sense and if some of the answers are obvious.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for those links. I went here http://joelshoemaker.com/computer/mac/mxpfs.html and have a few questions:
- How do I make it so that people do not need to enter a user name or password as long as they have the path or "Short Name"
- In which folder(s) do I put the files I would like to share?
- How do I make it so that no one can change or edit any of the files I share.

Thanks again.
