rtl8139v110I am running 10.2.8 on my 8500 and using it as a mail/web/print/file server. No problems. I decided to speed up the on board ethernet and purchase a 'no-name' - 10/100 PCI card. Although there was no info with the card, when put in, Apple's network utility identified as a realtek card. The vendor pointed me to the site that has the drivers for 10.2.x. [rtl8139v110] OS X's network pane sees the card and I have configured it with the same settings as the built-in port. I also changed AppleTalk from the built-in to the new PCI NIC. When I run 'atlookup' in terminal from my workstation, it clearly sees the darwin entry [the 8500] and the 8500 as an afp server. Alas, when I try to connect with 'connect to server' it times out or returns an error message [-36]. Printer sharing is also inoperative.

I am frustrated and will shortly start jumping up and down on the offending card [it only cost $10.00] unless i am dissuaded. Anyone out there with an idea

that error (-36) is an i/o error.. that doesn't sound good. sounds like you've got the right driver, so i bet it's some hardware incompatibility. wish i could help beyond this speculation, though - i'm not sure what to suggest except making sure other pci cards work in the same slot (or maybe switch slots).

"The thing of it is" as my southern friends like to say is that the hardware seems to connect; i.e. the card shows up in the nework panel, it is identified in Apple System Profiler,as properly in PCI slot B [which is where it is] and is seen as running. It feels like a configuration problem but what do I know. I'll try to borrow a card from someone and see what happens. Thanks much.
