Can an iMac and a pc share a cable connection? What is the best way? Firewire connection? Router? Thanks for any help in advance.

Go with a router. Use ethernet between the computers and the router if they're both desktop-it's cheaper. If one or more are laptops, go with a wireless router-they're more expensive, but not much. Bonus: all the cable modem sees is the router, so it doesn't matter how many computers you want to share the cable connection with.
