Hi,

I'm getting a bit baffled as how to get an OS X filesystem mounted on an SGI system. I've got NFS manager on the Mac working fine, and can mount the Irix system, but I can't seem to get things working on the SGI side.

In the remote filesystem window in Irix, it asks me for the name of the remote workstation, which it sees, but whe nit comes to the filesytem, it's not got a clue.

Any pointers?

Sure. Before I got a router, I used a crossover cable to get them hooked up initially. On the SGI side, I went into Toolchest > System Manager > Netowrking & Connectivity. From there select 'Set up and Start Networking in the right hand pane.

From the new window, follow the screen instructions. The first page will ask you about the network interface, it's usually set to the default built-in one, unless you have another ehternet interface installed. The next page will ask you whether you want to configure it either with DHCP, or an IP address. Before I got the router I gave the computer a name, and then a spare IP address, something like 192.168.0.2. After that, it should be setup. It'll want to reboot.
After that, it should be a simple case of FTping into the Octane from the Mac, or using the Connect to Server menu in the 'Go' pull-down menu in the Finder, then typing in
nfs://192.168.0.2, or whtever IP you gave the SGI.

One thing to note. initially when I got the router, I used DHCP from the above program, this worked fine for networkign the machiens, but I couldn't get onto the Net, after some tinkering in the Modify Network Settings program, I had to use the IP address method.

That should be it, but it depends also on how the SGI was configured beforehand too.

Is it Irix 5.3 you're using? If you can, try and get a hold of 6.5, ebay flings them up for a ridiculous price these days. You can get hold of the latest 6.5.21 for around $100, or sometimes less.

P.s. I tried the above method in Panther too, and connecting to an Octane runing 6.5.

These instructions for exporting filesystems in OS X via NFS could be worth a shot. I generally only mount exports on my Mac so I can't really offer a whole lot more really. Hope this helps.
