Hi all,

I just bought a new eMac and have connected to my local little network like this:

eMac (OS X), PowerMac G3 (OS 9), and a Laserwriter 600 Pro
are all hooked up to a router via etherrnet cables. The router, in turn, is hooked up to a cable modem for internet access.

I'd like to arrange it so I can mount the eMac's hard drive on the G3's desktop, and the G3's hard driver on the eMac's desktop. That way, whatever machine I'm on, I can get to files on the other one.

I once managed, while playing around, to get the G3's drive on the eMac's desktop, but can't remember how I did it (yeah, I should have written it down ).

My concern is this... if I have file sharing on, or am cross mounting drives, I want to make sure that this stays in my own local loop through the router and doesn't open up sharing to the internet... in otherwords, am I at risk for being hacked if I turn file sharing on or whatever it is I would do to cross-mount?

Thanks!

As long as you really have a router, and not just a hub or switch, your local LAN is safe from hackers. The router separates the LAN from the internet, unless you open file sharing ports on the router. By default these are not open.

Thanks for the info!
It's real router, I thnk. D-Link DL704P.
I think it even has a firewall on it, but I don't know if it's on or not (or how to set it up). I'm sure I can get the info on their web site.

In general, I guess I'm safe doing the cross-share thing.

Thanks!
