I'm grateful not to see major networking problems in the main OS X forum, but I'd love to hear descriptions of speed, convenience, reliability of networks before I upgrade to Panther (esp. after 10.2.8 debacle).
Ethernet is right, I hope?
How about Airport software - is it making internet connections drop less often?
Third-party routers, wireless - setup issues?
Active-directory issues (nobody responded to what Noka posted).
Thanks to you brave souls who dared to test it for "the rest of us!"

Overall, I think the networking has improved especially, samba performance. There are two problems I have found with networking: My signal strength has dropped from 10.2.8 and samba connections are lost after sleeping (which has been documented with Apple).
The System Preference for Network has change significantly and it looks like VPN's are easier to setup.

Sounds like good news. By signal strength are you meaning airport? If so, I wonder if that's just the scaling on the Network display. Have you check with something like MacStumbler to see if the actual signal db is different?

Is that with an ABS Extreme? [I've been sticking with my graphite because of AEBS connection-droppings.]
In any case, blackbird, can you tell me what you did to have that problem "almost fixed" with Jaguar?

well, i had downloaded the 5.0.4/3.0 airport update and downgraded to that
but in panther, i kept losing my internet, so i finally upgraded the airport, but now every day or so, it'll still have a good airport connection but no internet
it keeps losing the status of my pppoe connection, it'll have the time on the menubar, but then itll disappear, i read something in another thread bout pppoe conflicts but i'm a newbie and don't know much bout networking

Has anyone else had AE problems in Jaguar? Not being able to get internet even when your aiport status shows that you are connected?
Since buying my new AL Book and AE card I have been surfing at a local cafe that has a free wireless connection. Another customer at the cafe told me that the connection was an 11g.
Before Panther- I had no problem connecting.
After Panther- The server name shows up and my card auto-connects to this network. I even get a great signal strength (about 70%)
However, I cannot get on the internet.
Others in the cafe using PC's and Macs (using Jaguar) are connecting fine. Its just me
I can still connect at the local Panera Bread Co. which also offers free wireless (11b). I don't have a wireless base station at home to test.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

I am having the same problem with Panther and my AEBS at home. I just got this AL Powerbook and it won't connect. It worked with an old base station and a MS router without any problems. This is by far the most ANNOYING thing I have dealt with.

It's been concern over that kind of problem that keeps me from moving from Jaguar to Panther. Anyone with those kind of problems that lives NEAR AN APPLE STORE... it'd sure be great to have you carry it in to try connecting on their "Genius Bar".
I know some of them have been abused in the forums here, but when in MN I visited the Minneapolis store and they had some VERY knowledgeable, geeky guys! Spend a lot of time debugging all kinds of problems with me... from .mac mail to PHP/MySQL. You guys are lucky there!

I am using AEBS at home right now with g only option selected. I am using the 17" Powerbook, and I can connect just fine with my Powerbook without any problems really with Panther. I really don't know why those who has the Al 15" has this kind of problem... I hope Apple will figure this out soon.

Still nothing with my AL powerbook. I have a dual G4 mirrored that is connecting just fine (still using Jaguar)
I am afraid to upgrade now, but it's the base station that is causing the problems. In my apartment complex there are at least 5 wireless networks that appear, and I get IPs from the networks that don't need passwords.

I have a pb 500 with the regular Airport card and a Belkin wireless router. I was running OS 10.1.5 and I was getting good reception, 4 bars in my living room with the router in a back bedroom about 20 feet away. Then today I loaded panther and I am lucky to get 1 bar in the living room and 1-4 bars in the room with the router. I like Panther and hope this is temporary. Any ideas why the reception would drop and what I can do to fix it?
Thanks

For pwgphoto:
Have you tried testing signal strength with (free) MacStumbler. Other threads have raised the question whether signal is actually lower with Panther or if the bars in the Airport icon are just calibrated differently.
Another approach to accessing that would be: does the speed of your access to internet seem slower - as it likely would if signal actually were only 1/4 what you had before?
For example my TiBook (with external whip antenna) sitting 2 feet from ABS (11b) shows 4 bars in the Airport Icon, but MacStumbler shows only Signal of 55-58 (db?). If I disrupt the signal (detach antenna), Airport icon shows 3 bars, while macStubmler signal is 24-25. When I put the TiBook antenna adjacent to the ABE I can get a MacStumbler reading of >100; but of course the Airport icon cannot show a signal of greater than 4 bars. So I wonder if apple decided to change the scaling on the bars in Panther -- rather than you are actually experiencing a degraded connection?
(if so, it would have been nice had they told us)

New Apple K stinks, if you ask me. It won't recognize any Windows computer like Jaguar once did.

since upgrading to Panther, and subsequently 10.3.1, our Snow ABS drops and needs to be reset. It's really annoying.
Ordered a AEBS w/ modem to come this week. Hope this is better and not worse. Though it seems like it may be a problem with firmware, not the station.
Anyone have a clue as to how high a priority this is for Apple to fix in 10.3.2?

Same here. It think this is a dns or nat disconnect. I really don't know how to describe it but there is connection to the internet (and sharing) but web browsing won't work. Name resolution won't happen. I can ping dns though.

Thanks for starting this thread, Love Calm...
Still highly frustrated at my lack of being able to browse our Windows Active Directory network and the fact that my Mac keeps dropping little hidden file poops everywhere I go on the network...
Anyone with ANY advice??

I have this exact problem with 10.3.1 connecting to a Dlink Extereme G Access point at work. The signal strength is fine, but my Ti Book doesn't get an IP address from the DHCP server. If I connect to the ethernet via a cable then I get an address and work fine.
