And while we're asking, can someone clarify...
Isn't the CARD inside this (and Linksys, etc) exactly the same as in an Airport Base Station?

And are those "max numbers" actually absolute physical restrictions - or just practical limits to get decent performance?

Can any hardware techies fill us in?

The radio system in some wireless bases is indeed a PC card, while in others it's discrete chips on a board. The card used is up to the equipment designer-Linksys uses one vendor's innards, while Apple uses another, D-Link uses still another, and so on.

The max number of connections is based on how many separate MAC addresses the base station will be able to keep track of. Not really a 'physical' restriction, but a restriction none the less. You will probably see some degradation in throughput before you reach the max connection limit, simply because of the amount of data going back and forth.

so what is the final answer on how many connections can this thing handle...?

less than 10? more than 10? less than 50? more than 50?

or is it pointless to ask as it is all dependent on numerous factors...?

I believe it is 253, if I am not mistaken. Of course, that's a maximum. I presume you might have some performance degradation if you actually had 253 machines trying to connect to one base station.
