I was wondering if anybody has had any luck in getting WPA (now available via the latest AE update to Panther users) to work on non-Apple wireless access points. I tried over the weekend and didn't have any luck. Here's my setup:

Al 15" 1.25GHz running Panther and latest AE update
Linksys WRT54G router/access point running latest firmware (late September sometime)

I go into the WRT54G and select WPA with pre-shared key as the security method. For type I choose TKIP instead of AES (read on Apple's site that their WPA implementation uses TKIP) and enter my passphrase.

On my laptop I select the wireless icon from the menu-bar and see the available access points and choose Other (I'm not broadcasting my SSID). I then get prompted to select the type and select WPA Home User (trying to remember the exact wording, I'm at work now; I now its not the Enterprise choice as that requires a RADIUS server and I'd like to avoid setting one up to get this to work), the SSID and my selected passphrase. I then get a message back stating that the requested network could not be found.

Anyway, after a couple of hours I ran out of time to play with this, but seeing as how I'm in an apartment I really would like to get it working as its more secure than WEP. If anybody out there has had any luck with this without an AEBS please let me know. It'd be a shame to have to buy one of those to support what is supposed to be an industry standard. (I can setup WPA with Pre-shared Key just fine between my WRT54G and work XP laptop using my Linksys 802.11g PCMCIA card.)

I may have found the answer to my own question in the Apple forums:

On a side note, if anyone is using shared key under authentication type (Linksys Router) change it to auto for WPA to work properly.

I'll try this out tonight when I get home and let y'all know if it works.

Okay, just got through testing this at the house. The short story is it works. I configured my WRT54G using the above tip for "Auto" (even though the online help is misleading here, stating that either open access or shared-key will be used and that if you want to use shared-key only to select it). I broke out my work XP laptop and tried accessing the AP via without any WEP/WPA settings and it didn't work, so it appears that its impossible to access the router without the required passphrase.

Hope that helps some of y'all!

Thanks for this tip! I hadn't been able to get this to work, but when I set Authentication Type to Auto it connected right away.
