Re-posting this problem here as it seems a more appropriate forum:

The VPN connection part of internet connect seems to have stopped working altogether since installing 10.2.8 - clicking the connect button or command-D to make the connection elicits no response, nothing at all, nothing appears in the log, nothing happens, it just sits there gently pulsing.

Anyone have any ideas?

Well as no-one else seems to have any idea (or maybe care) here is the solution (although not the cause):
I deleted the 'PPTP' network port setting in the Network preferences panel.
Opened internet connect, opened a 'new VPN window' was told that 'your computer needs to be set up for VPN', clicked OK, filled in the VPN address details etc and it worked fine again.
Strange but not too damageing.
At least I don't have to go into work again.
