Well, in trying to get my HD sharable to a OS9 ibook, I changed some AppleTalk settings, and now find that my HP printer (connected via Ethernet crossover cable) is nolonger connectable in a weird way...

The Printer window opens an alert that says "AppleTalk disabled in System Preferences." and gives me the options to "delete job" "stop all jobs" or "stop job" (without any hint(had I been a TOTAL newbies as to WHERE in sys prefs I would enable AppleTalk).

So I go to SysPrefs Network pane; select Appletalk menu and find:
• Make AppleTalk Active <- is ALREADY checked!
• AppleTalk Zone <-no options, as I have no zones
• Configure <- set to "Automatically"

Isn't that what I need? There's an "Assist Me" button - which helps me set up Airport (which was STILL providing me with an internet connection just fine during this Ethernet/AppleTalk disability) . I hit "Apply Now" even though nothing has changed... and the printer's still "not responding" in its window... and the alert returns after a few seconds to tell me again, "AppleTalk disabled in System Preferences."

Instead of doing a rant on the non-Mac-like design of Network settings... can anyone offer suggestions. Must I dig around and (as per my sig) try trashing some prefs?

Well, here's an update. Apparently you have to disable Appletalk under Airpot in order to enable it under Ethernet. I hadn't realized that they were BOTH checked as ENABLED because on my OTHER machine with Panther I canNOT check them both (attempting to check "Enable Appletalk" under Airport on that Panther sys gave an alert saying that I must disable Appletalk on the other network to enable it on Airport).

Weird bug that may present some aggravations. Hopefully not to you!

FYI- Appletalk is off by default in Panther. You can turn it on by going to Applications>Utilities>Directory Access. That may fix the problem-

I am imaging machines in a lab setting. In on lab in particular after I image a machine you can not print.... You can not print because appletalk is not available. In the past I have unchecked and rechecked Appletalk int he network preferences and my zone would magiacally be found. Now I can not get appletalk to work at all.

However! the computers that I have not yet imaged all can see the appletalk zone.

I have alto tried checking and unchecking appletalk in directory access and zapping the pram

Any other suggestions?

No, that is AppleTalk browsing, not AppleTalk itself. AppleTalk is enabled in the Network pane of System Preferences.

Yes, I also have it enabled there as well and have also tried turning that on and off again. That is what I originally did last time I imaged to get things working.
Thanks for the input though.

Ok so here is where we are at. Both printers are working. All computers will print to both. However, when I Image a computer, it will not automatically find an AppleTalk zone. If I turn AppleTalk off, re-boot and turn it back on it will find the zone. I have found the exact hardware imaged the machine in my office which is a different zone. and it works. So the problem seems to be room specific.

Ok Anyone Anyone? I have posted this in a couple of forums and on an apple list serve with no answers what so ever. here is the lastest response from my network folks.

" Thanks for the information. I suggest setting up a time to go over as a group and looking at this. Appletalk is not any different on the KJ lab network than any other network and there isn't anything I can look for which might cause an issue with Appletalk on this network. We'll either need to find more advanced appletalk troubleshooting tools or ask Apple for assistance in why this is happening. If Appletalk is working fine on some of the systems there and is only having problems on some systems, then I think that points to a system issue. "

I am absolutely convined this is not a hardware or image issue and need some direction.
