Hello,

I have a TiBook 867 and am looking to get a wireless router...the cable connection would be shared with an iMac and possibly another older computer.

I'm not about to drop $300 or whatever outrageous price apple is charging for their card + basestation, and I've been seeing a lot of LinkSys routers on sale at Blockbuster

...my question is, what's the best router to get w/Macintosh compatability and a strong signal?

I like the Netgear MR814. Great reception, easy to config and for 35 bucks, you really can't beat it.

I have that exact setup - 867MHz TiBook, iMac, although I have DSL

After talking with my local Mac repair ship, I'm getting (today) a Netgear router. They use it in their shop, and it's about $70.

Yes you can beat it. I have the same and although it works ok for me the port forwarding is TERRIBLE and many many people report all sorts of problems with it.

I say look at D-Links.

D-Link has good products too, but Netgear beats them hands-down on price. You only need to worry about port forwarding if you need port forwarding, which most users don't.

I have all incoming web requests forwarded to a wireless web cam. This works (and has always worked) perfectly for me. Never a hitch. And it was TERRIBLY simple to set up.
I've never personally had much success with D-Link stuff. Even when it's worked, it's been a hassle.

Ok try this. See if you can make the netgear allow open ports to go to more then one computer. If you want to open the quicktime streaming ports for ALL the computers (that can mean 250 of em) fat chance, you can only choose ONE computer on the network. Pathetic.

So you're complaining that a $30, consumer-aimed router can't handle you 250 client LAN? That is pathetic. I think that for the vast majority of users, this unit would be perfectly fine.

Nope, I am complaining that it can't handle TWO! You can't open ports for TWO damn computers and it even has 5 ports on the unit itself.

If you knew what you were talking about you would agree and not come off so pathetic.

Although port forwarding is nice, and it would be nice and sometimes convenient for some to be able to port forward to more than one comp, the majority of home users just simply want to share the internet connection. The Netgear MA814v2 does this perfectly well, and when you can buy a 802.11b card and base station for less than $100, I think it's a good thing. By the way, if you use a Centrino laptop you must rev the firmware. I have a work Dell X300, and I just ran into and fixed this problem.

Awwwwe shucks... Now you're just trying to hurt my feelings.
Actually, this is one of the best posts I've read here in a long while: "If you disagree with my assessment, you are pathetic." I mean talk about sheer close mindedness... You're not even trying to hide the fact that you consider yourself a foremost know-it-all and are utterly uninterested in others' input and divergent situations. How neat for you.

Nothing to do with it. I like other opinions but you just don't know what you are talking about. Sorry.
