Firstly, I've searched but to no avail. Now my problem. My powerbook is running 10.31 and everything works fine.In university I've registered my ethernet MAC address with the IT staff who then allow me to get a dhcp address from their Windows 2000 server. My mac refuses to see the dhcp server and gives itself an ip in the 168.xxx.xxx.xxxx range.Pc laptops work !

Is this a problem with 10.31 ? The ethernet cable has been tested and works. The powerbook successfully gets dhcp ip addresses everywhere else.Any suggestions ? thanks in advance.

DHCP is DHCP, whatever is serving it. The problem is sometimes the length of time a client waits for an address, or mis-entry of the MAC address by harried, overtasked, underpaid, student-workers. Double check with the IT office to make sure your MAC address was properly entered.

I ran etherpeek on the card today and sure enough it is receiving packet broadcasts from other mac addresses but it is no receiving any reply from it's dhcp discover. The onsite tech has said that the powerbook card is a 3com and that disabling the 802.q protocol should solve this. However there is no system preference to do this This appears to happen with winxp also.

"It seem there is a setting set by default which prevents connection to the network in our system. If you all in I can change the setting and see if thinks work.

The setting that need to be disabled is the IEEE 802.q framework setting.
