Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything more on the Mac drivers for DirecWay satellite service? Last I heard, they were in beta, but have heard nothing since. And the "customer service" (if you can call it that) at DirecWay has no idea what I'm talking about.

I ask because my parents want to get Mac, but can only use DirecWay for "high speed" internet access (and they won't go back to dial up). I had gotten them as far as getting an iMac, but they couldn't get it set up using their old PC as a gateway. So they gave up and took the Mac back. They don't want to buy the Mac compatible modem ($600) either, so they are waiting for drivers.

So, anyone heard any good news? Or even some bad news? Any news?

As far as I can tell, the "beta drivers" don't exist. I've talked to people at DirecWay and Hughes: nothing.

Well damn, that's no good. I found out that DirecWay has a trade up program for older non-Mac compatible modems. And if you sign up for 15 month contract, they knock another $100 off. They say the net price for the modem is around $250. I might be able to get my parents to go for that.

I'm pretty sure they are using XP on their Windows box, and would be using Panther on the Mac if/when they'd get one. They tried to get their iMac set up that way, but couldn't get it going, and I wasn't in town to help them out.

I've heard good success stories with this, but they didn't have the patience for it.
