Hi, just bought a jetdirect card for my laserjet 5n, after the last one fried in a thunderstorm.

The printer selftest shows the card alive and well, and gives the ip address, but I can't ping it from the computer via the router, and it won't print either.

The lights on the router show a good connection.

Any ideas how to check where the problem is?

Thanks,

J.

Wrong cable maybe? Make sure you are not using a cross-over cable to connect to the router.

Do the link lights on the router light for the port the cable from the printer is plugged into?

You could also check the cable pinouts against the diagram here:
http://www.incentre.net/incentre/frame/ethernet.html

If your router has an uplink port, make sure that you have not plugged into it by mistake. If the uplink port is in use, make sure the immediately adjacent straight-through port is unused.

P.S. also make sure that the IP address for the HP is on the same subnet as your router, but is outside the range used by the router DHCP server.

For instance, if the router is a LinkSys, by default the DHCP server uses the range from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149. If that is the case, use something like 192.168.1.20 for the HP as that is on the same subnet, but is not a number which would be given out by the DHCP server.

Thanks, the cable is fine, and the lights come on indicating a good link.

I didn't realise you could change the ip address of the printer. Could anyone enlighten me on how to do this.

Thanks,

J.

Your Jet Direct Manual should tell you how to change the IP address using the buttons on the printer.

If not, the alternative is to change the IP address of your computer temporarily to a fixed IP address in the same subnet as the JetDirect and connect to the JetDirect's built-in administrative web server (which you access from http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the printer). You can then use the web interfact to change the IP address of the JetDirect, then change the IP of your computer back to its original IP.

Thanks for all your help. I didn't even realise that I could alter the IP address. The manual I downloaded didn't mention it.

Once I found the section on how to set it on HP's site, I was up and printing in moments.

Thanks again,

J.

I tried this but it says "Macintosh OS is not supported by this application". Any way to change the IP with a Mac?

That's the message that comes up in the web page. Nevermind- I've found out that I can telnet the jetDirect card, and have successfully configured it
