Hey all-

I just helped a friend split his DSL via a DLink WiFi router, so his kids could use the internet in their rooms. Each has a laptop. His wife was extremely concerned about the kids accessing inappropriate internet content from their bedrooms at night.

Is there a way to filter internet content at the router level, or does internet filtering only come as software which must be installed on each individual computer?

Thanks for any help-

You can do it at the router level but not with consumer hardware. His best solution is to either turn off the dsl modem at night or install software on each machine.

If you have a firm grasp on what sites you want your/his children viewing, you can edit the hosts file for what you want them to access by name and kill off DNS lookups in resolv.conf.

Of course if they are smart enough to do lookups for IP addrs there isn't much you can do without a content filtering device as stated above.

Netgear routers will allow you to do this.
