I'd like to install a cable modem router (DLink or Linksys are recommended by the evil empire's site) for my 17" iMac to hook it up with an x-box.
Has anyone got recommendations, etc. I saw the post line started by codywalton on 06-01-03 and wondered if there was more on point or a tutorial already out there.
Another issue is wireless or not, especially if there might be about 100 feet between the iMac and x-box.
thanks.

I have a Linksys router and it works great with my cable connection. I'm thinking about getting an xbox but was curious just why you would want to network them? Can you transfer games to and from the HD on the xbox? I've seen copies of games on BitTorrent but I'm not up to speed on the xbox. My PS2 just died and I really don't want another one. Tried to fix it but the ejection motor is cooked as far as I can tell.
Anyway to get back to your question, either router should work but I would recommend the Linksys since it has been so trouble free. I'm a network tech and aside from Cisco we use quite a bit of Linksys stuff and it works very well. The web interface is straight forward and very easy to understand. That and they're cheap-

I used LinkSys for years and they crashed every few days and were nothing but trouble. My netgear has been solid for over a year and was even cheaper then the Linksys.

Sorry your Linksys products sucked over the years. In my experience, Netgear has always been near the bottom of the pile. To each his own-

From my own observations, selection of router brand is sort of like selection of one's personal religion-some people can discuss the subject objectively and rationally, and others just get to the "grab you by the lapels to make their point" stage right away.
Look for a good deal with good support and go with it. Prices are low enough that you can play with a router until you decide you want something better, then change.
