In System Preferences:Sharing under Computer Name, there is a statement that says "Other computers on your local subnet can reach your computer at osxcube.local". osxcube is my computer name.

I interpret this to mean that other computers on my private network can reach my Apache server website on my G4 Cube using its computer name in addition to its IP address. But it is not working.

How can the other computers see my server just using its computer name, not its IP address? I'm currently running 10.3 (Panther).

All of the computers on my private network are connected via a router with DHCP turned on.

If you're not using DNS or *gasp* WINS, you're kinda screwed. The only thing you can do is go to each machine and make an entry in the hosts file (I guess if you don't have too many machines it's ok).

add an entry like:
192.168.x.x osxcube

location of hosts file:
OS X/Linux/FreeBSD: /etc/hosts

Windows 95/98/Me cwindows\hosts

Windows NT/2000/XP Pro_ cwinnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Windows XP Home_cwindows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

p.s. you want to assign the osxcube a static ip (outside the dhcp range so it doesn't "move around" by changing IP)
