hello all,

i'm sure i've see something like this on the forums before but i can't seem to find it. if so, sorry for the re-post.

my problem is this.

last night i needed to connect to my g4 533 powermac from my tibook 1ghz. opened the finder, clicked on the network icon and clicked on the powermac icon to connect. entered the username and password and connected. however and here's the strange bit, the drive on the powermac had a "-1" added to the name. ie. macintosh hd-1 as apposed to just macintosh hd. also, instead of just seeing the globe icon for the drive, i also see a folder icon named macintosh hd. tried disconnecting and reconnecting but same thing. rebooted both machines in the hope it would sort it. no joy.

has anyone seen this before? is there something i am doing wrong? help !!

thanks.

It sounds like you have 2 "Macintosh HD's" trying to reside ion the same desktop. Is the HD's on the 533 and PB both named "Macintosh HD"? Do you also have a custom icon for one of the HD's? Try renaming one of the drives and see if that fixes the problem

Ferg is on the right track. The OS uses the name you give the drive (or the one that it gets in the factory) to identify it. If you connect two machines with matching, default names, the OS has to figure things out. It does what it does to make the second instance of a name it knows look unique, thus the "-1" added to the second machine's drive name.
