Should work. Walls are the problem. I have a wireless router in the basement and have no problems with reception in a second floor bedroom. However a friend has problems with a router in main floor den with a computer in an upstairs bedroom where there is a tiled washroom in between.
The signals between the base and the client (your laptop) actually go in all directions. External antennas are built to direct the signal more outward than up- or downward, but that still shouldn't keep you from being able to connect.
