I have 2 machines at work: a Mac running 10.3 and a Win2000 PC. To share files, I enable Windows Sharing from the Sharing preference pane. When I'm done transferring files, I click the Stop button for the Windows Sharing and close the System Preferences. But If I go back to the PC I can still access the Mac, even if I have closed the network browser window. If I restart either one, it stops. I'm using the same login and password for both computers, so maybe that has something to do with it. I'm just wondering if someone can tell me what's going on here. Is this a security issue?

What's happening is indeed a security issue if you're not aware it happens. When you tell your Mac to stop sharing, it stops looking for the Windows machine. It does NOT stop allowing the Windows machine to look for the Mac! To do this, you need to disconnect from the Mac from the Windows machine. Under Windows 2000 this may not be very easy; since the Windows machine didn't initiate the share, it may not want to end it. Your solution, a reboot (which can be done on either computer) is a good way to completely end the connection.

I have the same problem...Apple screwed this up big time, network drives don't mount on the desktop anymore and with Jag all i had to do was drag to trash and eject and no more connection, this reboot to stop the connection is unacceptable!!!!!

Network drives will mount on the desktop in 10.3 if you do the command-k thing to mount them. One of the drives on another computer is mounted on my desktop as I type this.

you could kill/stop the samba daemon (smbd), but that will kill the print sharing as well.

Thanks for the replies. Can ayone tell me if this is only an issue with the Windows machine I connected from, or can any Windows machine access my mac after I have "stopped" sharing?
