In the next few days I'll be switching apartment units in the same building. All the units in this building are wired with live cable (as standard cable is included in the apartment's basic utilities).

If I were to move into another unit and plug everything into the wall, should my modem still work as long as there's cable coming in? I was always under the assumption that there's no information on "the line" but rather the information needed to connect comes directly from the system to the modem, hence modem specific (similar to cable converters).

According to Time Warner Cable, I'll need someone to manually come down and "reconnect" my service. I think they're wrong. They were wrong the last time when the guy finally came down and said no "reconnect" was necessary as cable was already in the wall and activated. I'm nearly certain that they're wrong this time too.

Thanks.

your cable modem's mac address should be sufficient enough to make the switch... unless, the cable system to the said apartment unit needs to be checked if it can "handle" a cable modem. Sometimes units are only upgraded as needed. Upgraded, meaning they are rewired or the signal is boosted. These things should not involve entry into the unit. Good Luck.

That's exactly what I tired explaining to TWC over the phone, but they've got some moron that had no clue as to what I was talking about and said that the process would require someone to actually come over and "reconnect" my service. All of the units in this building have been upgraded as it's mostly occupied by students. Does that mean I plug the modem into the wall and it magically works? Then I call TWC and tell them that I've changed my address only for them to "disconnect" my service and send someone out only to say that "everything's fine!" and charge me a cool $25 for doing nothing but looking at line and telling TWC to turn the signal back on? If I move units and the signal just works, I'll tell TWC that I'll be moving the first day that they're available to "reconnect" my service. Everything's a darn Bar-Mitzvah with the cable company.
