I'm a little bit weak in this area of networking, so please bare with me. I have a cable modem at home hooked into a Belkin wireless router. What I want to be able to do is remotely login to my computer from outside my local network over ssh and vnc. My question is, how do I do this?

I understand that my ip for my laptop is going to be of the variety 192.168.*.*, and that is meaningless outside of my local network. So, is there away to login to my router and be directed to my laptop? I assume there's a way, but I'm not sure how.

Your cable modem should have some interface (presumably web-based) that lets you setup port forwarding. You need to forward the appropriate ports (22 for ssh and 5900/5901 for VNC).

However, for security purposes, you might prefer to only open ssh and use an ssh tunnel to encrypt the vnc traffic. This reduces the number of ports you need to have open, and masks the fact that you're running VNC.
