I have a small office where i'm trying to connect an internet connection between my laptop and a colleague's ibook, who is in another building about 200 feet or so away (detached garage with office).

I'm wondering if I could get some insight on whether I should buy a WAP or a wireless router (and what's the difference, i think i understand it as more or less a LAN for WAP and sharing for a router).

While we'd only want to share our internet connection and some files here and there, I'm also interested in wireless printing in my office and wonder if a wireless print server woudl interfere with any other wireless routers, etc.

Is the best WAP a netgear? i had heard some difficulties being posted on their latest WAP.

any help would be appreciated!

I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are
missing.

A wireless router is generally just a WAP with the ability to share your network connection built in. Go for a wireless router. Linksys' WRT54G is a great little device; 802.11G + connection sharing. It acts like a normal switch between the PCs so sharing printers and files will be no big deal.

Oh, after reading your post a little closer... in regards to a wireless print server, you could go with a wireless router is also a print server (like the Netgear FWG114P) if you'd like. If you go with a wireless router without a built in print server (like the linksys I mentioned), you can just get one of these and plug your printer into one of its ethernet ports.

thanks wyck for the info.

i had heard that linksys will not guarantee their product to be upgradable when the "G" standard becomes an official standard this summer, though? that's why i had decided against using them as netgear promises to allow an upgrade. ?

G has been official for ages. No updates should be needed.

Yes. The firmware for the Linksys supports the official G standard.
