I am setting up a wifi network at home with a Blueyonder broadband modem. I need to get a Panther box and a OS9 box connected.

Should I get an airport station to serve this or a Netgear router and two airport cards ? Any thoughts ?

Also, with this kind of setup what is the security between the two macs ? ie. I dont want the other mac viewing my information.

Thanks in advance.

the Netgear is way cheaper and will do the job. As long as the ports are closed on both then I wouldn't worry about it. Panther has a firewall, but OS 9 you may need to download personal firewall software.

Thanks !

and there are no security issues between the two macs themselves ? ie. the other person on the network intercepting emails or such ?

thanks

The Netgear is a switch, which means unlike a hub, it does not broadcast so even a packet sniffer will not work... however the wireless packets are a different issue. If you're really paranoid then I suggest using WEP because most people will not go through the trouble of decrypting it.

I like my Netgear router -- except when it's dead. I've had it replaced once (it died altogether) and now the wireless part died (at least I can still use it as a wired router). Ugh!

(The postage to send in the broken unit twice is approaching the cost of a new wireless router on sale.)
