I just moved to a location that does not have cable; I'm bummed as I was pelased with Comcast. I now have Qwest DSL 256 down 640 up, and while much slower, it'll do.

On Comcast, I used a Motorola SurfBoard feeding an Asante wireless router. I did port forwarding on the Asante box for file sharing, Timbuktu, etc, and I never had to do anything to the Cable modem. So, I assumed that the SurfBoard did not do any firewalling.

The ActionTec DSL box does NAT, and basic firewalling, and the wireless router is the only thing hooked to it. The Asante talks my my deskotp and laptop, with MAC access control to let only those two computers on the wireless network.

My problem is that I'm not sure how to get my port forwarding done. Do I do the port forwarding on the DSL box AND the Asante wireless router. Should I turn off NAT on the DSL box, and just forward ports from the Asante?

Slightly confused...

Comments please!

Sounds like you want to just turn off all of the features of the DSL box and let the Asante router do everything.

Yup, they're right. The problem I see is whether or not you got full documentation for your DSL box; a lot of DSL ISPs don't like the user playing with the modem/router, so they either lock or password protect the things, or they studiously avoid acknowledging that the provided modem is actually more than just a modem-my SBC-provided modem is a Wirespeed 516, more than "just a modem."
