UDP traffic expectations

At school, packets that Ridge marks as UDP account for up to 5 K/sec, averaging 2. It's a small college with a T3 connection, each ~50 person dorm being a subnetwork. What's happening here? As far as I know, UDP is just the local router asking "You still there?" every second. Why the large amount of data?

UDP is used for some internet traffic.
DNS requests, some streaming music, and more.
