I hear that many non-Apple wireless routers do not support AppleTalk. Can I still do IP printing?

I have a printer server attached to my HP LaserJet 6MP that runs greater via the IP Printing option under Print Center. I'd love to hook the print server to a new wireless router if possible. Can it be done?

Yes, Appletalk would be a problem for some. Based on what you are saying though, you should be able to connnect to this printer without a problem. IP Printing options allow for LPD, IPP and Jetdirect remote printers which have no reliance on the Appletalk protocol.

AppleTalk is considered a "legacy" technology. It allowed you to network various devices without having to deal with TCP/IP. Later, it was enhanced to allow "AppleTalk over TCP/IP" connections. There are few, if any, compelling reasons to choose AppleTalk over today's well established, open standards such as TCP/IP printing, etc.

Thank you for confirming that impression. Certainly IP printing via my JetDirect print server (sans AppleTalk) has been extremely convenient.

My wife is an unrepentant PC user (yeech!) and her machine is attached to the same network switch as the printer server. We share the HP LaserJet with no problems and no additional software beyond the drivers. It's wonderfully convenient.
