Hi
I recently bought a G5 and havenīt been able to connect it to the internet or to another computer.
The Network preferences screen only shows the yellow light and the computer has never achieved an ID other than one that starts with 169.
The Cable modem is working fine. Iīm actually using it right now with a Windows machine. My service provider does not require any adresses to log in, as long as they have your ethernet cardīs ID (which they do, for both machines).
They I tried to connect the G5 to the windows laptop. The G5 wouldnītĻ"find it" but the PC could find the Mac.
Iīve also installed the 10.3.2 update, and it hasnīt changed anything. I suspect this has to do with Panther and itīs honestly quite a downer, after you spend 3000 on a machine.
Please help me because due to my work this machine needs to access the internet.

Ok where do I begin, first of all, your cable modem provider has both of your computers MAC addresses? I can then assume that you are not accessing the internet with both computers using a router. Following that assumption, make sure that DHCP is turned on for the G5, then plug it into the cable modem and reset the cable modem (actually I would pull the power, wait 5 seconds, and plug back in). Often times cable modems cannot "hot swap" because it binds the ip address to the mac address. If that doesn't work, then you will need to tell me where in the assumptions above I made a mistake.
Buena suerte.

Hi Si,
Sorry I wasnīt more specific. I tried what your suggested with no results. The modem has been actually pretty good at hot swapping. You assumed right though, I am not using a router, because at least for the moment, I shouldnīt need it. I hoped the G5 would be the one connected at all times. Initially the PC was intended for taking to work (AutoCAD) but until now itīs been my life savior. And yes, at least the provider tells me they have the MAC number for both machines. Let me know if you think of some other posibility.
ĄUn saludo desde Espaņa!

in System Prefs->Network and in the "Show:" dropdown list, and you choose Network Port Configurations is the Built-in ethernet checked?
by the way, you are lucky to be in Spain especially if you visit Catalunya during MotoGP! Go Rossi! or the Spainards would probably say Go Barros!

Si,
Unfortunately it is checked. I also tried recycling the modem by leaving it several hours unplugged with no results. I also connceted the G5 to the PC laptop, but the conncetion wouldnīt complete because of an error -43. It wanted me to type a password (which I shouldnīt need) to access Windows. I was also able to ping the Windows machine.
However I did find an Apple text (although it concerns 10.2.8) which says I should connect the modem to a router (not directly to the G5).
I find this to be a rather crappy fix (an expensive one as well, because a router costs between 100 to 150 around here) and I doubt it actually works (if it doesnīt, Iīll get stuck with a router I donīt particularly need- we still donīt have Circuit Cities that let you take to product back).
Let me know if something else occurs to you because if I donīt solve this, I think Iīll be taking the G5 back to the store. Theyīll have to take it because, as much as it hurts to say, without internet, despite its power, this G5 becomes nothing but a expensive paperweight.
As for the MotoGP, thatīs better news. I like Rossi and Barros because I have strong ties with Italy and Brazil. Rossi is also sponsored by Repsol (a Spanish Gas chain). But our best pilot here is Gibernau, and I think heīll be causing Rossi more and more headaches as he perfects himself.
Anyway, thanks for the help. Let me know if you think of something.
Un saludo

The 169.x.x.x IP address is what network adapters assign themselves when they're configured to use DHCP, but are unable to locate a DHCP server.
Where are your computers obtaining leases from? Your ISP? If so it sounds like they either failed to enter the MAC address of your G5 or entered it incorrectly.
As for Rossi and Repsol... Isn't the Repsol sponsorship of the Honda team that Rossi has now left in favor of Yamaha?

Thanks Fizzle,
Iīve contacted my ISP for at least 10 times and they assured me they have everything OK, but given the circunstances, Iīll try for the 11th one. Still, if you all think of something else...
And youīre right - my bad - Rossi announced he was leaving for Yamaha after the Valencia race (early november, I think). Iīm not sure how thatīs going to go, but I hope it will spice it the championship. Yamaha is putting a lot of money in most racing championships (open wheel as well)so they want the best to pump their team up. As long as Rossi and Gibernau can keep up the rivalry, weīll be OK over here.
Saludos

I hope Rossi (on Yamaha) beats Biaggi (on Honda), and puts this rediculous talk of Rossi can only win on Honda RC211V. Although Sete is a very cool dude. As long as Kurtis Roberts eats S**T, I'll be happy next MotoGP season.
I'm very clueless as to why this is happening IF the ISP has checked the MAC address.

Hi Si,
Sorry but my internet was down for a few days. Guess what, the aholes at my ISP had never registered my machine and had me calling them for 25 days. They always told me everything was OK and I had no way to check and make sure. Anyway, at least the soap opera had a happy ending.
Thanks for the help pal, and I guess youīre right about Rossi. Heīll still give Sete some headaches.
Muchas Gracias
Moltes Gracies
