Hello!

I have an ethernet DSL modem, a mac running panther, and will soon have a house mate with a pc laptop.

What would be the cheapest way to share the DSL connection?

Your suggestions are appreciated, I'm sure I could work it out, but I know it would take a day of googleing. When it's likely of you will just hand it to me on a plate!

Don't say unplug the mac and replug in the laptop!

Many thanks,

Monkpea

You should be able to find a cable/dsl router for $20 - $40. You will also need two CAT5 ethernet cables.

another way is to add a cheap $15 2nd nic to the Mac and use Internet Sharing. connect the mac to the dsl router and the laptop to the mac. course this means the mac would have to be on if the laptop wants to surf.

With routers as cheap as they are, it's just asking for pain and trouble to spend money to add a 3rd party NIC and driver to a Mac to perform the function, burdening the Mac's processor routing for the laptop when it should be working for you, and adding to its uptime requirements.

cheapest != best

I agree that a router device is better, but he did say he wanted the cheapest route

This is still the cheapest/best I know of. I use one and have absolutely no complaints. Great reception and full feature set.

Ya, but in the title he says he wants wireless. And since the Netgear is only 30 bucks or so, you can hardly go wrong.
