Have a G3 600 combo iBook which I'm selling to a friend and a new G4 800 machine is on its way to me.

I have an airport card and regular base station at home (w a DSL connection) which I love. It'd be great to be able to use my new HP all-in-one printer (6110 ix) wirelessly .

Any advise on how to configure this for the least amount of money? Do I really need to get a new Extreme card/base set-up? If I need the new extreme station, can I just go with the one w/o the antenna jack/modem?

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance....

If you decide to go with the AirPort Extreme base station, yes, you can get the less expensive model-both models have a USB port for sharing printers.

There are other products that include 802.11g wireless networking and a USB print server, including the SMC2804WBRP-G, which you can get for about $80 from buy.com (after rebate). Quite a difference in price, eh?

Painless? Almost painless. You can get your "technical novocaine" by doing two things: read the manual thoroughly both before and as you do the setup, and come here for explanations and advice when something doesn't make sense.

As far as I know right now, Apple is the only big maker of wireless access points that doesn't use a browser-based configuration process. SMC definitely does have you use your browser to configure their products, so all you have to do is type the default IP address the box comes with into Safari and you're on your way.

The rest of the configuration process is pretty straightforward, but there are lots of options you don't need to mess with most of the time. That's where you come here and say "Do I need to xxxx?"

The only thing left that can get complex is encryption of your wireless network. You DO want to use whatever encryption comes with your new router, and it's not that big a hassle if you have some guidance-again, we like doing that sort of thing or we wouldn't be here.

Have fun-that's the whole point of all of this, isn't it?

Thanks! Finally got my SMC barricade router to work. Had to call tech support to be able to configure it but it works! Now, I've plugged my HP 6110 USB printer into the USB port at the back of the back of the router and I can't print anything... When I try to print, it says "...please check printer connection..."

Thanks in advance!
