I have got an Athlon XP3200+ home build PC (Dual Lan, 10/100) that I do most of my work on these days hooked up to an Speedtouch ADSL USB modem for my 512k connection.
Thing is, I just bought a Dual 450 Powermac and want to share the same connection.
I have the following equipment, and want to find out if a connection is possible, and how I should do it!
1 USB ADSL modem,
1 Alcatel 510 Ethernet Modem/Router. (Not currently in use)
Stacks of Cat 5,
Any advice would be gratefully received...
Cheers,
Marc

Does your Alcatel 510 just have the one port or four?

You could go with an ethernet modem to replace your USB modem, then get a router. The router would connect to your dsl modem's ethernet port, and your two computers to the router. This way you'd be able to easily share the dsl connection AND create a LAN for file or printer sharing among the mac and pc.
what os is on the pc? xp pro? I have a cable connection and the cable folks authenticate with the XP box's MAC address. I have two NICs, and use the second to jack into a router, whereby I can share it to any other computer (or networked device, like my replaytv) connecting through the router.
In general, however, ethernet modems are far more flexible and compatible than usb-based modems. I recommend exchanging the usb for ethernet or outright purchasing an ethernet modem.

The 510 v3 is an ethernet router/modem combined... It has 4 ethernet 'output' ports.
The problem is that I know nothing about networking with PCs!
I used to run 3 Macs off the 510 via cat 5 cables and things just 'worked'. I had 8 static Ip addresses and just allocated one to each Mac, but I'm dynamic now, and also don't know how it will work if I plug a PC in...

What OS are you running on the PC. It's not too difficult to network with a PC, but the steps to follow are different depending on which version of Windows you're using-and MUCH different if you're using something else!

I have a Netgear Wireless ethernet modem/router with 4 ports and I simply connected the pc to one of the ports and the Mac to another and it all works perfectly.
