Actually, I have a couple of questions. I want to transfer files between my G4 Cube and G4 Titanium PowerBook in the quickest way possible (in terms of transfer rate):

1. First, does both my Cube and PB support 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet)?

2. I currently have a 350MHZ patch cable (RJ45 8P/8C). Is that sufficient to allow data transfers up to 1Gbps, or do I need to upgrade to a different cable?

I understand the difference between 100BASE-T (Fast Ethernet) and 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet), but I get totally confused trying to compare megabits and megahertz. Any enlightenment would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.

your powerbook's ethernet port should be autosensing, which means you don't need to use a crossover ethernet cable.

what's better than ethernet is firewire--if you have a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable, you can connect both macs and boot one into firewire target disk mode. Transfers are very fast. Radioshack sells the 6-6 pin cables for around $7. They go for at least $25 in wal-mart.

I agree with fulmer - IP over firewire would be the best option - read more about how to do it here

And the Cube does not support gigabit thernet (unfortunately)

Better yet, if they're both on 10.3, you could use the built in IP over FireWire. This will be your fastest data transfer from a cube, as it's ethernet is 10/100 only, no GigE. That's how I most often move data between my Cube and pbk- tops out at about 14MB/sec. I'm haven't yet got my powerbook to move over 19MB/sec on GigE.

If the Cube did GigE, that cable would work.

The oldest TiBooks aren't GigE, that wasn't on board until.... the 550 and 667 pair came out, I think.

I meant straight FW target disk mode, which is different than IP over FW. But I guess IP over FW would work as well, althought it may be a couple steps too many compared to the FW disk mode method.

either way, write back with questions, success, or failure.
