Hi,

I posted this in the os x forum but it's gone off the page.

My ISP has somehow blocked data addressed to various ports on my computer. This means I can no longer use the mlnet, and various other p2p programs for that matter.

Does anyone know how they do this and if there is a way for me to work around it?

The obvious answer is to change ISP, which I will do soon.

Many thanks,

pea

Circumventing their filtering will not be easily accomplished. Some P2P apps use specific ports/ranges to operate, others are a bit more sophisticated like Kazaa 2. Cisco NBAR, Packeteer traffic shapers, generic firewalls, generic router ACLs, can all be used to block this kind of traffic. Some with more success than others depending on the protocol and the network device available.

An interesting and feasible way around this is to tunnel a PPP connection over SSH, which is generally not blocked by carriers, to a system on another network and feed all your traffic through that hopefully unfiltered connection in order to connect to these P2P networks. Not exactly trivial, but certainly do-able.
